Call to endorse Africa Initiative for Planetary and Space Sciences

Research groups in Planetary and Space Sciences are now emerging in Africa, but remain scattered and underfunded. To elevate planetary and space science across the entire African continent, we propose the Africa Initiative for Planetary and Space Sciences, an idea that stemmed from a panel discussion during the planetary science sessions of the 35th International Geological Congress (IGC) in Cape Town, South Africa, in 2016. The initiative will involve coordinated actions with international partners for training M.Sc. and PhD students, for developing locally-based scientific facilities, and for the progressive integration of the fascinating discoveries about our Solar System into University curricula.

The identified benefits of education and research programmes in Planetary and Space Sciences and the call for endorsement are presented in two articles published this week in EOS:

The African Academy of Sciences has already endorsed the initiative and is a partner.
