It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to Johannesburg, South Africa, for the third AnnualGrantees Meeting (AGM) of the Developing Excellence in Leadership, Training and Science (DELTASAfrica) programme. At the core of the African Academy of Sciences is the implementation of science, technology and innovation programmes to develop scientific leaders and enable them thrive. The AAS will be accelerating this work through a renewed strategy to ensure that programmes, such as DELTAS Africa, continue to train future generation of scientists who provide solutions to challenges facing the continent.

We are midway through the implementation of DELTAS Africa, and have correspondingly themed the event, The View from Halfway, as it has been organised to focus on the Mid Term Review (MTR) to assess our collective progress in implementing the five-year programme. The MTR seeks to identify gaps and challenges and to make recommendations to improve implementation. Our hope is that this opportunity for introspection will enable us to deliver an even higher quality programme.

We provide this event book that includes speaker biographies and a list of participants and their contacts to guide and encourage your engagement in, and following, the meeting. We would also love to hear your thoughts, so spare a minute or two on the experience sharing survey.
We hope that you will enjoy the AGM and the networking it facilitates. Moreover, we are delighted to convene in beautiful South Africa, where we have carefully selected the Indaba Hotel because of the variety of activities that it offers to combine work and play during this three-day event.
