The African Academy of Sciences (The AAS) is a non-aligned, non-political, not-for-profit pan African organisation. The AAS’s vision is to see transformed lives on the African continent through science.

Our tripartite mandate is recognising excellence through The AAS’ highly prestigious fellowship, Affiliates and award schemes, providing advisory and think tank functions for shaping Africa’s Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) strategies and policies and implementing key Science, Technology and Innovation programmes addressing Africa’s developmental challenges.

Position Overview

The Policy and Fellows Manager will provide thought leadership in the development, coordination, implementation and monitoring of policy and fellows’ programmes/initiatives through strategic partnerships in policy, research and innovation in line with The AAS Strategic Plan. The incumbent will provide technical support in generating scientific knowledge relevant for the development of the continent

Key responsibilities;

  • Participates in the development of AAS Fellows’ skills in setting science priorities for the continent
  • Research existing demographics of the Fellows and non-fellows’ universes. Conduct and analyse market research to determine competition, generate customer insights, and identify areas of opportunity for new Fellows’ acquisition
  • Provides technical support in generating scientific knowledge relevant for the development of the continent
  • Work with Director, Strategy and Partnerships   to set and review revenue membership acquisition goals on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis
  • Manage Fellows’ relationships with existing organisational members, in close collaboration with programme and operational teams
  • Work with Fellows Officer to ensure accurate reporting on membership acquisition and renewal efforts, including pulling data and metrics to provide detailed information on pipeline status
  • Support in disseminating knowledge through the Fellows country networks and participate in trainings to enhance their capability to successfully influence policy and practice
  • Assist The AAS in identifying high-impact policy channels and leveraging those channels to advance the cause of STI
  • Work in collaboration with eminent scientists   across multiple fields, policy influencers, policy makers and policy enactors across the continent to form quality relationships
  • Key contributor to disseminating findings in form of policy briefs, position papers and reports
  • Works with programme teams to inculcate a culture of innovation to provide pioneering, responsive, timely and impactful solutions to contemporary science challenges
  • Identifies and advocates for the mainstreaming and alignment of policy and Fellows related initiatives across programmes
  • Leads in the assessments, tracking and reporting of progress against strategic goals relating to policy and Fellows programme implementation and action plans including quality assurance and capacity building
  • Ensures compliance with strategic and policy frameworks/protocols relating to science
  • Prepares and presents periodic policy briefs on policy interventions/matters related to  The AAS Strategic Plan
  • In consultation with the Director of Strategy and Partnerships, develops a cost-effective budget, schedule and tracks policy and fellows programmes to ensure compliance
  • Develops and implements the necessary policy, governance and advocacy training strategies for Fellows
  • Coordinates setting of programme work plans and staff performance targets and undertakes periodic performance appraisal for staff.

  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to network and to develop and maintain strong relationships at all levels;

Academic Qualifications

  • A PhD  in a relevant discipline

Knowledge and Experience

  • Working experience in a policy position within a scientific and dynamic business environment
  • Candidate will be a natural collaborator with an ability to establish and maintain lasting relationships both internally and externally
  • Three+ years of professional experience in one or more of the following areas: fundraising &/or business development, relationship management, or membership acquisition
  • Ability to build strong relationships with colleagues, prospects and existing customers
  • Strong analytical, strategic planning, and relationship management skills are critical
  • Must have the ability to manage multiple, complex priorities within demanding timeframes and be able to plan and manage at both strategic and operational levels
  • A driven, high-energy team player who is excited about taking this organistion to a new level as a membership organisation. Prior experience in science-based organisations is a plus, but not mandatory.
