The Royal Society, in partnership with the Department for International Development (DFID), has opened the second round of applications for Programme Grants as part of its Royal Society - DFID Africa Capacity Building Initiative.

Applications are invited in three priority areas:

  • · Water & Sanitation
  • Renewable Energy
  • Soil-related Research

The main purpose of this new programme is to assist in strengthening collaborations between scientists based in sub-Saharan Africa. You may also see the attached flyer for more information on the initiative.

The level of support for Programme Grants: The awards will support research consortia of one UK lab and three African labs with up to just over £1.2million over five years. Applications will have to be submitted by 19 March 2015.

The main challenge now is to ensure that the information is getting to researchers at relevant institutions across sub-Saharan Africa. Thus, I would like to ask whether or not your organisation would be willing and able to help us again to disseminate the information amongst your contacts in sub-Saharan Africa.

I have attached two flyers with basic information on this scheme, one of which is a shorter version in French. Could I ask you to circulate the two documents? I would very grateful indeed. I have also enclosed the link to our webpage.
